UK introduced shared parental leave a few years ago — men can absolutely get a few months off as well — up to 9 months paid (though not very well paid), if the mother goes back to work very quickly.
Other countries in Europe have guaranteed time off for father as well. In Sweden, each parent is guaranteed 3 months (90 days) paid (allowance is lost if they choose not to take it).
